How did I come to this formulation?

My family’s constant battles with weight loss issues made me realise that changing eating habits was extremely hard, even when your health depended on it. This lead me to study the subject of “health psychology” during my psychology degree. I studied a specific module on the psychology of diabetes. It explored the serious difficulties people with diabetes had in following medical advice and prescribed diets, sometimes with devastating consequences. The subject was fascinating and it talked about different types of “models of behaviour” relating to health. Frustratingly, however, it did not offer a satisfactory explanation or a solution.  It was not until years later when I studied Hypnosis and Hypnotherapy that I discovered the mysterious force preventing people from making healthy changes. It was the power of the subconscious. The subconscious determines most of our routine decisions, without us being aware of it.

The unknown content of our subconscious makes changing habits difficult

Knowledge, well-informed logical knowledge, does not automatically reach the subconscious, which is the part of the mind that makes most of the Habitual decisions.  If the subconscious is not in line with the changes the person logically wants to make, changes will not happen. This alignment between conscious desire and the subconscious responses can happen naturally for some people, but not for many.  When it comes to eating habits and weight loss, there is a multitude of factors that will impede such alignment. This is where hypnosis can help.

How does Hypnotherapy help?

Hypnotherapy accesses the person’s subconscious, to find the specific reasons why change is difficult. It reprocesses the information that blocks change and updates it with new information.  It is the information update of the subconscious, under trance, what allows it to accept the changes the person wants to make.  When the subconscious agrees with the logical mind, the inner battle of wills between the different parts of the mind disappears, and so does the self-sabotage.  It is not a miracle. The person still has to make the changes and stick to them, but the changes will happen more effortlessly because they become inner desires, instead of impositions. What the subconscious desires, is what tends to happen.
